Divorcing a business owner? Know what the business is really worth
When your husband, wife or civil partner owns a business, its value is often the largest and least visible asset in the settlement. The owner knows the figures. You may not. An independent written valuation gives you and your solicitor a clear, evidenced number to work from.

Why the non-owning spouse needs an independent figure
In England and Wales a business built up during the marriage is usually treated as a matrimonial asset, even if you never worked in it. The court rarely orders a sale. Instead the owner keeps the business and its value is offset against other assets, such as the family home or pensions. That makes the valuation decisive. A figure that is too low moves money away from you.
We do not sell businesses and we have no stake in the outcome. Our report sets out the earnings, the adjustments and the multiple used, so every assumption can be tested by both sides.
Signs the business may be undervalued
- Profits fell sharply around the time of separation.
- Personal costs such as cars, phones or family travel run through the company.
- A large director's loan account or unexplained cash movements.
- Low salary but high dividends, or money retained in the company.
- New contracts, customers or work in progress not reflected in the figures.
- A valuation produced by the owner's own accountant with no workings shown.
None of these proves wrongdoing. They are the points an independent valuer checks and explains.
How it works
- Tell us about the business and where your case stands.
- We agree a fixed fee and list the documents we need, usually from Form E disclosure.
- We normalise the profits, apply evidenced market multiples and test the owner's figure.
- You receive a written report for your solicitor within 3 working days from receipt of the information we need.

Frequently asked
My spouse says the business is worth very little. How can I check?
Ask your solicitor for the last three years of accounts, the latest management accounts, the corporation tax returns and the director's loan account. An independent valuer can then normalise the profits, add back personal costs run through the company and apply a multiple supported by evidence. That shows whether a low figure stands up.
Can I get a valuation if I do not work in the business?
Yes. Most of our divorce work starts with information disclosed through the financial remedy process, such as Form E and its attachments. You do not need access to the premises or the books yourself. Your solicitor can request the documents we need.
Will the owner's accountant's valuation be accepted?
It may be a starting point, but the accountant acts for the business and is not independent of the owner. An independent report that sets out its workings gives you and your solicitor a figure to compare and a clear basis to challenge assumptions.
What does it cost?
Divorce valuations start from £795 for a written valuation of a single trading company, with the report delivered within 3 working days from receipt of the information we need. We agree the fixed fee before any work begins. Group structures or formal expert witness work are scoped and quoted separately.
Do you replace a single joint expert?
No. A single joint expert is appointed with the agreement of both parties or by the court. An independent report from us helps you understand the business before or alongside that process. We will tell you plainly which route suits your situation.
This page explains valuation, not legal advice. Your solicitor will advise on your settlement.
